Classes held at the
Tonkawa Reservation
have a priority enrollment for members of the Tonkawa Tribe. 
Non-Tribal members and Non-Indians can attend if space is available.


Classes have a minimum enrollment requirement and may be canceled if the minimum in not met.

Please enroll early to ensure your place in class. 


Refunds of Fees paid to
Barking Waters will be given
if a class is canceled. 
No Refunds of Fees will be given after the beginning
of the first class. 

Refunds of Fees paid to PioneerTech have certain restrictions - see their website for more information.


For classes sponsored by Barking Waters, the Instructor's  and Supply Fees are due at the beginning of the first class in cash or check.

The Class information to the right list basic class info along with a supply/tool list and estimated miscellaneous supply fee.

The miscellaneous supply fee covers only enough supplies to complete the class project.

If you have supplies of your own, you can bring them, but keep in mind they may not be the size, type or style used in class.

If you'd like to take a class that has been canceled because of low enrollment,
contact me via e-mail and if there is enough interest,
I'll see what I can do about getting a class together at a different location or time.

I will bill your tribe if I receive official confirmation of their intent to pay
prior to the beginning
of the first class. 

If I have not received
this confirmation prior to the beginning of the first class, you must pay all fees and I will give you a receipt that you can submit for reimbursement.

Bone Awl, Needle and Knife


Description:        Student will learn how to shape useful Bone items used by early Native Americans..

Class Length:     9 Hours Total - 3 evenings of 3 hours each - 5:30pm to 8:30 pm

Class Date:         September 7, 14, 21, 2010 - Pioneer Tech - Ponca City, OK

Class Project:      Students will make a Bone, Needle and Knife

Supplies:             All the bones will be supplied by the Instructor.  There will be a $10 Miscellaneous Fee payable at the first class to cover the cost of the bones and other miscellaneous supplies..  Student may choose to cover the handles of the Bone Awl and Knife with scraps of leather and beads and will need to bring these items to class with them.

Tools:                 Optional - Leather cutting, sewing and beading tools.



Tubular Peyote (Gourd) and Brick Stitch Beadwork


Description:       Beginning student will learn basic Peyote (Gourd) and Brick stitches. 

                            Returning students will need to bring an item to bead on - e.g. Walking Stick, Wine Glasses.

Flat Dance Fan


Description:        Student will learn to choose and assemble feathers to make a Flat Dance Fan. Student will cover the handle with leather but will not learn how to bead on the handle in this class.

Class Length:     6 Hours Total - 2 evenings of 3 hours each - 5:30pm to 8:30 pm

Class Project:      A Flat Dance Fan.  Student is welcome to use Blue Macaw feathers provided by the
                                Instructor or can bring their own feathers to class.  Some purchased feathers
                                are not suitable for this class - so please contact the Instructor before you buy
                                them.  Student's bringing their own feathers will need to bring 7 - 9 feathers.
                                Please do not bring any feathers that are restricted by the United States
                                Government. 

Supplies:            All supplies will be provided by the Instructor.

Tools:                 All tools will be provided by the Instructor.



Puzzle Bag


Description:        Students will make a leather bag that is a Puzzle to open.  

Class Length:     6 Hours Total - 2 evenings of 3 hours each - 5:30pm to 8:30 pm

Class Date:        November 9, 16, 2010 - Pioneer Tech - Ponca City, OK

Class Fees:        Miscellaneous Supply Fee:  $20  Students may be able to reduce this fee by 

                                 bringing their own Leather (8" x 20") and beading supplies and tools.

Supplies:              All supplies will be provided by the Instructor.

Hard Sole Moccasin


Description:         Students will make a pair of Plains Indian Style Moccasins with minimal beading.  

Class Length:      9 Hours Total - 3 evenings of 3 hours each - 5:30pm to 8:30 pm

Class Date:          November 30, December 7, 14, 2010 - Pioneer Tech - Ponca City, OK

Class Fees:          Miscellaneous Supply Fee:  $50  Students may be able to reduce this fee by 

                                 bringing their own Leather (a piece big enough to be 4 x as wide and 4

                                 inches longer than the feet measurements) and beading supplies and tools. 

                                 Members of Federally Recognized Tribes may be able to get all or part of

                                 these fees paid by the Tribe.  Contact me for more information.

Class Limit:         8 Students.

Class Project:      Hard Sole Moccasins made to wearer's measurements

Supplies:              All supplies will be provided by the Instructor.

Applique Beadwork - Beaded Medallions (Rosettes) and Barrettes



Description:         Student will use Back and Couch Stitch techniques used in Applique Beading.

Class Length:      6 Hours Total - 2 evenings of 3 hours each - 5:30pm to 8:30 pm

Loom Beading


Description:        Student will learn basic Loom Beading techniques plus will explore alternate techniques such as Pulled Warp, Double Warp and Heddle Loom.  There will not be enough time to finish a project in each technique but student will learn enough about the different techniques to complete projects on their own..

Class Length:     6 Hours Total - 2 evenings of 3 hours each - 5:30pm to 8:30 pm

Class Date:         March 1, 8, 2011 - Pioneer Tech - Ponca City, OK

Class Fees:         Miscellaneous Supply Fee - $20.00 payable to the Instructor at the first class.

Class Project:     Student will learn how to make a loom and how to bead on it.  Instructor will

                                  bring a Heddle Loom for student to practice on before they decide to buy

                                  one of their own.

                             Beeswax..

Tools:                  Instructor will have various tools for student's use during class. 



Soft Sole Moccasins


Description:        Student will learn how to make One Piece Soft Soled Moccasins. 

Class Length:     6 Hours Total - 2 evenings of 3 hours each - 5:30pm to 8:30 pm

Supply Fee:         Miscellaneous Supply Fee:  $50  Students may be able to reduce this fee by

Supply Fee:         Miscellaneous Supply Fee:  $25  Students may be able to reduce this fee by 

                                 bringing their own Wool Broadcloth (an 8" x 16" piece) and beading

                                 supplies and tools. 

                                 Members of Federally Recognized Tribes may be able to get all or part of

Class Limit:         8 Students.

Class Project:      A small beaded Strip that can be made into a bag or pouch.

Supplies:              Student will need to bring 6 hanks of 11/0 beads, size A beading thread and

                             Beeswax and 3 - #10 Sharps Needles...

Tools:                  Instructor will have various tools for student's use during class. 


Man's Tabbed or Fringed Leather Leggings


Description:        Student will learn how to measure, mark, cut, sew and fringe Deer, Buck or

                             Elk skin hides.

Class Length:      6 Hours Total - 2 evenings of 3 hours each - 5:30pm to 8:30 pm

Class Date:         April 5, 12, 2011 - Pioneer Tech - Ponca City, OK

Class Fees:         A Miscellaneous Supply Fee of $20.00  payable to the Instructor at the first

                                  class..

Class Limit:         8 Students.

Class Project:      Man's Leather Tab or Fringed Leather Leggins  

Note:                   To estimate how many hides you will need, hold each one up to your leg, wrapping it around your though and checking the length.  If you're a large or tall man, you many need a 3rd, small hide for the finge.

                                    Fringing Leather takes a long time and student may only be able to finish one of the leggings completely.  Student will have the skills and knowledge to complete the second legging outside of class.

Supplies:              Student will need to provide 2 - 3 large hides. 

Tools:                  If student has a pair of Leather Scissors, they should bring them to class,

                            otherwise they can use the Instructor's

Class Project:      Breastplate, Choker, Necklace and Armbands  

Supplies:              The amount of supplies varies depending on the size and whether the        
                                    Breastplate is for a man or woman, Student will need to contact the 
                                    Instructor at least one week before the class in order to get a
                                    supply list. 

Tools:                  Instructor will provide all the necessary tools. 



Fingerweaving


There are 5 - 6 week long Fingerweaving Sessions offered.


A Student can start at any of the Sessions as we will be working on designs Individually. 

We will learn the designs, and complete a small sample in this order;

Diagonal, Chevron, Multi-Chevron, Arrow, Multi-Arrow, Lightening


It will probably take several sessions before Student has enough skill and knowledge to

complete a large item such as a Dance Belt or a Man's Streamers and Garters Set.

Description:        Student will learn various fingerweaving designs.. 

Class Length:     18 Hours Total per session - 6 evenings of 3 hours each - 5:30pm to 8:30 pm

Supply Fee:         Miscellaneous Supply Fee:  $15  e information.

Class Limit:         8 Students.

Class Project:      A small fingerwoven sample of each of the fingerweaving designs.  Student may be able to begin a large project during a session. 

Supplies:             Student will practice designs on acrylic yarn provided by the Instructor. Once the student has progressed enough to begin fingerweaving an larger project, they will need to purchase 1 skein of 3 or 4 different colors of 100% wool, (Brand name - Cascade 220) yarn and (Optional) 3 - 6 hanks of 8/0 seed beads.  Beeswax.

Tools:                  Instructor will have various tools for student's use during class.
