The Meaning of "Barking Waters"

Barking Waters is the English translation of the Seminole Indian word "Wewoka".

After the Seminoles were moved to Indian Territory on the Trail of Tears, they settled near a creek with a small waterfall that the Indians called "Wewoka" or Barking Waters.

The Creek still runs over the Waterfall and the water still barks.

If you ever want to check this out for yourself, contact the Seminole Nation Museum in Wewoka at (918) 257-5580 for directions.  While in Wewoka, spend some time in the Seminole Nation Museum.

Wewoka is not only the capital of the Seminole Indian Nation of Oklahoma, but was also my hometown until graduating from High School in 1974.

I am of Seminole/Creek/Cherokee descent.
